Water Conservation

• Sioux-Preme Packing is Committed to Reducing the Amount of Water used in our Production Processes, Recycling Water and Cleaning Our Water to Degree that Makes it Suitable for Agricultural Crops
  • In 2009 Sioux Preme Reduced Water Consumption by 12% saving 9 million gallons annually.
  • Nearly 10% of Sioux-Preme’s Water is Recycled for Reuse with the Facility
  • Substantially All of Sioux-Preme’s Wastewater is Cleaned for Application to Nearby Farm Fields in a environmentally responsible manner.

By-Product Capture and Treatment

• Proteins and animal fats removed from wastewater processed and used as animal feed ingredient
• Animal fats captured and used for bio-diesel production.
• Other by-products composted and used as nitrogen based fertilizer in accordance with environmental standards.

Recycling

• Over 95% of Sioux-Preme’s Cardboard and Other Packaging Materials are Recycled.
• Nearly All Pallets are Reused

Energy Reduction

• Variable Frequency Drives and “Soft Start” Components Installed on 80% of production Drive Units greatly Reduces Peak Energy Usage.

Air Quality/Greenhouse Gas  

Biogenic greenhouse gas emissions are those generated during combustion or decomposition of biologically-based material, and include sources such as utilization of forest or agricultural products for energy, wastewater treatment and livestock management facilities, and fermentation processes for ethanol production.

A greenhouse gas inventory is an accounting of the amount of greenhouse gases emitted to or removed from the atmosphere over a specific period of time (e.g., one year). A greenhouse gas inventory also provides information on the activities that cause emissions and removals, as well as background on the methods used to make the calculations. Policy makers use greenhouse gas inventories to track emission trends, develop strategies and policies and assess progress. Scientists use greenhouse gas inventories as inputs to atmospheric and economic models.

• Develop inventories for the following parameters and establish appropriate reduction goals.
  1. Energy Inputs (Electricity, Natural Gas, Propane)
  2. Transportation / Shipping Distances (Refrigerated, Non-refrigerated, Empty Backhauls)
  3. Packaging Materials (Cardboard, Plastic Wrap, Plastic Containers, Etc.)
  4. Chemical Usage (Production Chemicals, Cleaning Chemicals, Sanitizers, Etc.)
  5. Total Water Usage
  6. Waste / Wastewater Generated
  7. Recycling

Livestock Handling 

• Holding Pens Designed In Accordance with Humane Handling Techniques Prescribed by Dr. Temple Grandin.
• In January 2007, Sioux Preme Installed a State of the Art CO2 Stunning System for the Humane Processing of Livestock.
• Four Years Running Sioux Preme has Scored >99% on its Third-Party Animal Welfare Audits.
• Sioux Preme Packing also supports the National Pork Producers Council “We Care” PQA Initiative plus, TQA
